ABOUT PHILIPPA

Philippa Dickens, artist

Philly is a British contemporary painter based in the Cotswolds and Cornwall.

She graduated from Chelsea School of Art in the early 80s having studied Textile Design. At the time specialised in print going on to work in the design studios of prestigious furnishing fabric houses. Hand painting (pre digital!) and colouring exquisitely detailed patterns and colourways creating the latest trends in the industry. Many a week spent overseeing the print runs at the historic dyers and print works, Stead McAlpin, in Carlisle.

“watching hundreds of meters of beautiful colourful fabric come flying off the print run after weeks of perfecting the design and colour balance.... the simple joy of seeing it develop from a simple blank piece of paper to the finished article .... gave me the greatest of thrills”

Philly’s career path has been brought to many an abrupt pause due to the consequences of a severe car crash. However, undeterred, she utilised her creative skills and experience to develop an interior design business working with the finest materials to create beautiful homes for private clients here in the UK, France and New Zealand.

Around twelve years ago the urge to pick up a paint brush again was too strong to ignore. So, with paintbrush, palette knife and oil paints in hand she began to paint again, leaving the rigid disciplines and repeat patterns of her textile days behind, evolving a much more carefree hand. Exploring the figurative and the landscape but always with a considered colour palette, beautiful subtle textures and most importantly creating space for the viewer to dream......

“it’s a privilege to have the time, the peace to develop, to be critical, to experiment, to
dream, to destroy and to immerse yourself undisturbed. The ability to take yourself to
another place in your mind, in the moment whilst painting. The subconscious wonder
of building a true relationship with your work never ceases to amaze me. The stronger
this commitment the more convincing the finished outcome.

In the early years Philly’s paintings were sold through galleries and the Affordable Art Fair, London. In more recent years she has gone on to have solo sell out private exhibitions and now her paintings are found in private collections throughout the UK and abroad.
